Literacy
Reading: We have been doing shared, partner, independent, and guided reading activities. We have been learning the routines for our reading block. The children are becoming experts at choosing a just right book, reading to self, reading to someone, and retelling stories.
Fundations: We have been reviewing sound cards, blends, digraphs, and closed syllables. Students have been tapping sounds and building words.
Writing: We will be studying the Personal Recount Genre. Our targets include using a plan, correct paragraph structure, writing a clear topic sentence, using capitals and periods, writing 4-6 complete sentences, including transitional words, and subject modifiers.

Math
Our learning goals for Unit 1 include, review skills from first grade, values of coin and bill combinations, telling time, understanding a number line and grid, counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and tallying. We will be playing many games including Addition Top It, Broken Calculator, and Money Exchange.

Science/Social Studies
We have been working on being responsible individuals, groups, and community members. We have also kicked off our Second Step lessons which help build teamwork qualities. Discussions have centered around different emotions including pride, fear, disappointment, and how they change in different situations. We are anxious to start our Plant Unit this month.

Homework
Please continue to help your child read fluently, or smoothly, by "scooping" or "phrasing" words together, and using good expression. This is a skill that students must practice repeatedly for the entire school year. Student's progress is measured on the DIBELS Test at least three times yearly and on the DRA at the end of the year.

Thank you for coming to Back to School Night! We enjoyed meeting all of you. If you would like more information regarding the second grade curriculum, please call or email your child's teacher.

Volunteers
Volunteers are always welcome to help with learning. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who have signed up and to those who have already come!
